Steps to Apprenticeship

Apply for apprentice program Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 3:30pm
excluding holidays at the Construction Training School, Room 104.  To contact the Iron Workers' Joint Apprenticeship Program please call 314-644-1550.   (click here for directions.)

Requirements to apply:

Must be 18 years old

Must be able to pass substance abuse test

Must pass a physical examination by a registered physician

Applications are received throughout the year.   The cut-off date is January 15th for the current year.  Any applications received after that day will be considered for the following year.

Pass the Scholastic Abilities Test for Adults (SATA)

Attend two weeks of pre-apprenticeship classes

Participate in oral interview with Joint Apprenticeship Committee members

Apprenticeship class is selected through a ranking system

Sign Apprenticeship Agreement and union membership

Pass substance abuse test

Complete "hands-on" orientation

Get a job with a contractor

Apprentices attend training four weeks each year for a total of 160 hours of training per year.

Apprentices are paid a $150.00 stipend for each week they are in school.

Apprentices make between $ 15.00 and $25.00 per hour.

 

Pay rates for Iron Workers

First term of First Year 60% of journeyman's wage
Second term of First Year 65% of journeyman's wage
First term of Second Year 70% of journeyman's wage
Second term of Second Year 75% of journeyman's wage
First term of Third Year 80% of journeyman's wage
Second term of Third Year 85% of journeyman's wage
First term of Fourth Year 90% of journeyman's wage
Second term of Fourth Year 95% of journeyman's wage

Tuition

There is an initiation fee of $100 for all apprentices.

Second year $330
Third Year $247
Fourth Year $275

This does not include union dues or initiation fees into the Iron Workers Local 396 Union Hall.
